The Art of Motherhood
Showcasing mothers in all of their glory, The Art of Motherhood features a collection of images and visual stories of eight moms from all walks of life unraveling the beauty and challenges of parenthood. Unveiling the work of Aitina Fareed-Cooke, an award-winning photographer, winner of the CEPA Gallery exhibition award, Buffalo Urban League of Young Professionals and recognized by 43North’s Ignite Buffalo (People’s Choice Award), Fareed-Cooke’s project is the culmination of her own experience as a mom and documented stories of other mom’s around the city. Reminiscing over her own experience when she was a single mom for a time, Fareed-Cooke, now married with two children wants her work to create meaningful conversations about the meaning and purpose of motherhood.
“It’s very challenging but beautiful at the same time to be a mother, just to watch your children grow and develop into their own personalities is really special. You learn so much about what it means to have grace, patience, and endurance, which is why I wanted to capture these moments,” Fareed-Cooke says.
Previously presented at a private event last year at the Darwin House in Buffalo, Fareed-Cooke desired to bring The Art of Motherhood to a more public space this time. Intending to play a significant role in Women’s History Month, the event will take place at the Leroy R. Coles Jr. Library in the lower level at 1187 E. Delavan Avenue at 12:00pm and is free and open to the public. The event features photography, film and a panel discussion of women detailing their unique journeys in motherhood. Highlighting two professional dancers, a mom who works as a doula, a mom who has fostered multiple children throughout her lifetime, and more. The panel digs deep into the struggle of being a full time mom while juggling other responsibilities at the same time. Balancing full time motherhood with career, education or other priorities is not easy but achievable. Realizing the time and dedication it takes to birth and raise children Fareed-Cooke brings together the raw, delicate skill that being a mother involves.
“Sharing these stories are so impactful and I wanted to show how motherhood can be considered an art form,” Fareed-Cooke says.
Fareed-Cooke will be announcing the launch of two creative photography sessions; the Matriarch Sessions, for women who are the sole surviving matriarchs of their families and the ‘Sistahs’ Sessions specifically for sister siblings. Individuals who are interested can register for these sessions at the event. Get Fokus’d Productions will also be accepting any donations from attendees interested in giving. A portion of the proceeds raised at the event will support similar projects in the future.
“The Art of Motherhood” will showcase on Saturday, March 7th at 12pm at the Leroy R. Coles jr., Library. The event is free, but space is limited. Click the button below to reserve your seat by registering online today!
